Enrolled as an Advocate of the Calcutta High Court in July, 1964.
Practised on both original and appellate side in the Calcutta High Court. Appeared in many important Civil and Constitutional cases.
Worked as part-time lecturer in the Commercial and Industrial Laws in the City College, Calcutta from 1964 to 1971 as well as in the Law Department of Calcutta University from 1971 to 1985.
Elevated as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on Feb 17, 1986.
Appointed the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on Apr 29, 1999. Appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and took oath on May 8, 2000. Took oath as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on Jul 18, 2000.
Served as the Governor of West Bengal from May 18, 1999 to Dec 4, 1999.
