• Graduated from St. Stephen's college, Delhi in 1979. Completed LL.B. from Delhi University in 1982, LL.M. from Harvard University in 1983 and Doctor of Juridical Sciences (SJD) Harvard in 1986.
• Appointed as Addl. Solicitor General of India (1998-2000). Designated as Senior Advocate in 1998.
• Appeared in several important cases involving PIL, Rights of Bonded Women Workers, Rights of HIV Positive Workers in the Work place, Contract Labour and Rights of Religious and Linguistic Minorities.
• Appeared on behalf of several public bodies including RBI, Port Trusts, Municipal Corporations and Universities.
• Taught International Law at Oklahoma University, USA in 1983 and was Visiting Professor. Comparative Constitutional Law at University of Bombay (1988-1997).
• Appointed as Additional Judge of High Court of Bombay on Mar 29, 2000.
• Took oath as Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on Oct 31, 2013.
• Elevated to Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016.
